Breaking It Down: Q&A About Period Product Waste Management

claire coder, founder + ceo

Hi! I'm Claire. I founded Aunt Flow after getting my period in public without the supplies needed.

At 18 years old, I dedicated my life to developing a solution to ensure businesses and schools could sustainably provide quality period products, for free, in bathrooms. Our products are made with organic cotton and we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact! Since 2021, we've donated over 7 MILLION period products to menstruators in need. I call this people helping people. PERIOD.®

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of organic tampons and pads vs. conventional products?

Organic cotton period care offers some major benefits for both you and the planet. Let’s dive into the deets below!

Reducing Waste: Organic cotton tampons break down better in landfills than conventional ones because they’re made from natural materials, which degrade faster than synthetic fibers like rayon.

What’s the difference — environmentally — between plastic vs. cardboard tampon applicators?

Did you know?! Plastic tampon applicators are among the top ten items found during beach clean-ups.

Aunt Flow tampons are plastic-free while STILL maintaining comfort. Our smooth-tip applicators with concave grips allow for easy insertion while also caring for the environment. How can I compost my tampons (individual and commercial)?

In commercial settings, composting isn't the best end-of-life option for used period products due to health risks and contamination concerns. Most composters, according to the Compost Manufacturing Alliance, don’t accept these items unless they have a specific certification. However, compostable packaging (like wrappers) could go in compost bins — with clear education to prevent contamination and ensure proper disposal.
